Each painting is an abstract artwork created by painting layer upon layer and intuitively adjusting the patterns, colors and shapes. Daan Roukens starts each painting with a simple pattern, which eventually turns into an experiment of color and composition. The classic technique of painting layer upon layer is Roukens’ creative base, but patterns and color combinations used in previous artworks often return on new surfaces. Working from the concept of rhythm, he continuously pursues to find tension between the absolute repetitive and the asymmetrical.
In addition to this work ethos, Roukens also expand the repetitive aspect to other media. By reproducing and using digital canvases for contemporary materials to create new structures and products. In this case Roukens printed Painting #16, 17, 19, 20 on high quality art paper in a limited edition of 50 prints. The artwork on paper shows every brushstroke, just as the original painting, but due to the material, size and technique it gets a totally different look and feel.
